FRAUD FRIDAYS: FRAUD FACT FRIDAY: Online Marketplace Overpayment Scams

As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.

Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.

Today’s Fraud Friday: Online Marketplace Overpayment Scams

These scams look like eager buyers offering extra money, but they’re really trying to trick you into refunding funds that never existed.

How They Work

• Scammers “accidentally” overpay by cheque or e-transfer.

• They ask you to refund the difference.

• The original payment later bounces or is reversed.

• You’re left covering the loss.

Steps to Protect Yourself

• Decline overpayments from strangers.

• Wait for payments to fully clear before shipping items.

• Use secure marketplace payment systems.

• Trust your instincts when a deal feels off.

What to Do If Targeted

• Stop communicating with the buyer.

• Contact your bank if you refunded money.

• Report the incident to the platform and to your local police if you have lost money.
