BREAKING: Air Quality warning now at level ORANGE : Environment Canada

As the smoke from the nearby Guichon Creek wildfire continues to billow into our region, Environment Canada has issued an ORANGE Air Quality alert for the remainder of the day, meaning residents can expect poor air quality and reduced visibility.

Environment Canada says that the current conditions are likely to remain in place for the next 24 to 48 hours and also include areas such as, South Thompson, Kamloops, 100 Mile, Shuswap, Vernon and Fraser Canyon areas.

The Guichon Creek Wildfire is now being reported as 152 hectares in size today and remains out-of-control.

“Monitor the situation for any wildfires near your area at EmergencyInfoBC. Follow all emergency announcements relevant to your location,” said Environment Canada officials.

Environment Canada warns that exposure to high smoke levels can pose threat to your health regardless of age or health status.

It is recommended that you should avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the warning has ended.

You are encouraged to stay indoors in a space with cleaner air.

Some people are more likely to be negatively impacted by smoke. This includes people with lung and heart conditions, pregnant individuals, infants and young children, people aged 65 and older, and anyone whose health is affected by a chronic condition or acute illness.

Meanwhile Air IQ, says the air quality this afternoon (July 31) is considered hazardous.

The service reporting that the air quality in Merritt is at 928 US AQI*. Readings under 99 US AQI* is considered moderate.
