FRAUD FRIDAYS: Fake Parking Ticket or Municipal Fine Scams
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Fake Parking Ticket or Municipal Fine Scams
What is a Fake Parking Ticket or Municipal Fine Scams?
These scams look like official tickets or city notices, but they’re really attempts to make you pay a fine that doesn’t exist.
How They Work
• Scammers leave fake tickets on windshields or send them by email or text.
• The ticket includes a link to a payment site that looks legitimate.
• The message claims you’ll face penalties if you don’t pay immediately.
• The payment portal collects your credit card details for fraud.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Check with the municipality before paying any unexpected fine.
• Look closely for spelling errors or odd website links.
• Avoid scanning QR codes or clicking links on unsolicited notices.
• Pay fines only through official city websites or in person.
What to Do If Targeted
• Contact your city’s bylaw office to confirm whether the ticket is real.
• Report the scam to police and the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre.
• Monitor your bank accounts for unauthorized charges.
Bottom Line
Always verify a ticket before paying, scammers rely on people acting quickly.
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
