FRAUD FACT FRIDAY: Fake Bank Inspector Scam
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Bank Inspector Scams
What is a Bank Inspector Scam?
It often starts with someone claiming your bank account is under investigation, but the real goal is to trick you into handing over your cards, PIN, or money.
How They Work
• A caller pretends to be a bank investigator or security officer.
• They claim your account has suspicious activity and needs immediate action.
• They pressure you to hand over your debit card or share your PIN.
• They may send a “courier” to pick up your card or ask you to move your money to another account that they provide to you.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Hang up and call your bank using the number on the back of your card.
• Never share your PIN or banking passwords with anyone.
• Decline any request to hand over your card to a stranger.
• Treat urgent or threatening messages as red flags.
What to Do If Targeted
• Contact your bank right away to secure your accounts.
• Report the incident to your local police if you have lost money.
• Keep any phone numbers or messages you received as evidence.
Bottom Line
Real banks will never send someone to collect your card or ask for your PIN.
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
