BRITISH COLUMBIA —According to a study of 30,595 small businesses across Canada, B.C stood out as one of Canada’s Top ‘Terminators’ of jobs over the past three years.
Despite grocery store inflation and the housing crisis being at an all time high, British Columbians are being relieved of their jobs at one of the highest rates of any province.
They sit behind Ontario as the second worst province when it comes to employment cuts.

Ontario had the highest three-year average number of hourly terminations (28,132), followed by BC (9,722), Alberta (6,664), QC (3,335) and Nova Scotia (2,334.)
BC terminations for hourly employees ranged from 9000-11,000 on average over the last three years. (2021-2023.)
57,584 Canadians working for small business decided to quit their jobs over that same three year span.
Quitting (quietly, loudly or otherwise) is a growing trend for Canadians, which puts a lot of pressure on business owners who put in countless hours training employees only to see them quit anyways.
On the positive side, 5,178 quit to ‘return to school’ and 648 left their jobs to ‘start a new business.’

“It’s been a challenging three years for all Canadian businesses and Canadian small businesses in particular. The challenge is that we are on trend for slower hiring and slightly higher terminations.” said Shrad Rao, CEO of Wagepoint.
“But trends can quickly change, we are betting on the grit, determination and resilience of Canadian small businesses to find a way to thrive in 2024.”
Nationally, younger Canadian workers (20-29) topped hourly position terminations in 2021.
There is a significant increase (+ 7,086) in 2022 for national terminations amongst 20–29-year-olds for hourly jobs (compared to 2021.)
It seems the new work force of young adults is being terminated at an alarmly high rate.
For reference the youngest Millenial will be turning 27 in the year 2024, Millenials age range is around 27-40 as of December 2023. Generation Z makes up most of the 20 year olds in the workforce that experience termination, about 65 %.
