Waiting to go Home – The Realities of Evacuation
Chapman Evacuated | Zach Amin
MERRITT — While some were thrilled to hear evacuation orders being rescinded, others are still reeling from the devastation the province has endured over the past few weeks.
As of Friday, August 25th, the Crater Creek Wildfire remains out of control. Fire crews continue to battle the 44,000 hectare blaze, both Canada and the United States are working together as the blaze crossed the border into Washington State almost a week ago.
Jean Chapman is stranded in Merritt living out of his van with his girlfriend, he’s a victim of the Crater Creek Wildfire that has affected Keremeos.
“I was evacuated from Keremeos, it happened while I was at work. I currently live in my van, now I am in Merritt trying to go back home. No gas, no food, I’m panhandling here hoping the good people of Merritt will help me out.”
Chapman is originally from Quebec and came to British Columbia for work.
There are resources out there for victims in a similar situation.
