As the sweltering temperatures continue into the weekend, the Kamloops Fire Centre has announced that effective at noon Friday July 7th, caterogy 1 campfires will be prohibited throughout the region including here in Merritt.
The ban comes as thousands begin to descend on the Merritt area for the annual Bass Coast festival which also starts on Friday.
Since April 1, 457 wildfires have burned 869,861 hectares in British Columbia. This is a staggering number considering the 20-year average for this time of year is 16,218 hectares.
This campfire prohibition will remain in effect until noon on Oct. 13, 2023, or until the orders are rescinded.
