MERRITT – As we approach the snowy season, it’s time for residents to get winter tires put on their vehicles.
On most routes throughout BC, vehicles are required to have winter tires with the snowflake logo on them or chained tires between October 1-April 30. There are select highways not located through mountain passes or high snowfall areas, where winter tires and chain requirements run between October 1-March 31.
Sheila Hatch from Fountain Tire in Merritt said winter tires have softer rubber which is able to grip the ice better on slushy roads. When comparing the different tires, Hatch said the all-seasoned tires, with the snowflake logo, will work for the requirements but don’t provide as much safety as true winter tires would through the snow.
The penalty for those who do not have the proper winter tires on their private passenger vehicles is a $121 ticket. For commercial vehicles that are not carrying chains when required are subject to a $196 ticket. Also when a commercial truck bypasses an active chain up area they could be looking at a $598 ticket.
