Advanced voting beings today

MERRITT – Advanced voting begins today for the upcoming municipal election.

Between 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Civic Centre, residents can go cast their early ballot.

In order to be eligible to vote residents must:

• 18 years or older on October 15
• Canadian Citizen
• Living in BC at least six months
• Resident of Merritt
• Not be disqualified from voting by law

If non-residents wan to be able to vote they must:

• 18 years or older on October 15
• Canadian Citizen
• Living in BC at least six months
• Not be disqualified from voting by law
• Owned property in Merritt for at least 30 days
• May only vote once (those who own two properties don’t get to vote twice)

In order to cast a vote, the required documentation is:

• Two documents that prove your identity
  • Signature
  • Date of birth
  • Social Insurance Number

The documents could be:

• BC Drivers Licence and BC Healthcare card
  • If you have a combined licence and healthcare card it only counts as one
• BC ID card and utility bill with your name on it
  • Contains signature, name, and address
• Owner’s certificate of vehicle and a property tax notice
  • Contains signature, name, and address
• Credit/debit card issued by bank

If you can not make it to advanced voting today, there is another opportunity on October 12 from 8:00 a.m-8:00 p.m..

Residents are voting for a mayor, six councilor seats, and three school board trustee positions.

General voting day is October 15th.
