Gas leak evacuates NVIT

MERRITT – Nicola Valley Institute of Technology has been evacuated after a gas leak on campus today (September 15).

“For the remainder of the day, all classes have been cancelled,” said NVIT. “The Merritt campus will reopen tomorrow, September 16, 2022.”

Merritt Fire Rescue said an excavator hit a gas line but they are now sure why or how yet, the investigation is still ongoing.

All faculty, along with those living in the dorms, have been evacuated.

“Please avoid the area around NVIT at this time, and follow instructions of fire department if nearby,” said the City of Merritt.

According to Dave Tomkinson, Fire Chief, they are waiting for FortisBC.
