Industry organization raising funds for Nicola Valley abattoir project

The province doled out $1 million for an abattoir in May, but SSMPA says its budget for such a facility has increased significantly since it was first developed nearly three years ago.

Now, the organization is applying for further support from the Local Food Infrastructure Fund (LFIF).

The grant requires its applicants to contribute 25 per cent of the budget in cash up front, meaning the SSMPA must come up with $150,000.

SSMPA says its recent survey found “the biggest barrier to the growth of the small-scale meat industry in the Thompson Nicola region is a lack of processing capacity.”
