RCMP Warn Motorists To Slow Down On Highways

It was a busy Sunday for members of the Merritt Highway Patrol.

Officers report that they took eight excessive speeders off the highway including one driver clocked at 187 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. It was also noted that some of the individuals involved were also not wearing seat belts.

Sgt. Josh Roda of the Merritt RCMP told Q101 News just because driving conditions have improved, doesn’t mean excessive speed is allowed.

“I think people (drivers) think because the roads are clear now that they can drive quicker. That’s not the case,” warned Roda. “The speed limits are posted for a reason. If the limit is 110 km/h then that is the maximum. Doing 187 km/h is both ludicrous and dangerous. ”

Roda added that getting caught driving at excessive speeds could be very costly with fines ranging from $368 to $483. Roda noted that seven day vehicle impound will also make your pocketbook lighter as well.

“Where it really hits you is the seven (7) day vehicle impound because you will be responsible to get yourself back home,” Roda said.” So if you are from the coast and you get caught speeding in Merritt, that will be a very expensive taxi ride.”
