Merritt RCMP are once again issuing warnings to motorists who use a cellphone while behind the wheel.
Sgt. Josh Roda of the Merritt RCMP, told Q101 News that distracted driving is a huge concern in the region and their detachment are warning motorists of the implications if you get caught.
“It really is hard to comprehend that regardless of how much we try to bring this problem to light and tell people the repercussions of texting and driving, people still do.” said Roda.
Roda added that within those few seconds it takes to answer a call or send a text, could turn tragic if your attention is hampered by your cellphone.
“If you get caught, it’s a $368 fine,” he added. “The fines are steep and the law will be enforced.”
It’s estimated that around 400 deaths a year are caused by texting and driving in Canada.
