A memorial to honour missing and murdered indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people (MMIWG2S), has been blessed up at the NVIT campus. The site was constructed by students at the school with help from various local partners and business that donated to the project.
“Missing and murdered indigenous womens and girls and two-spirited memorial project was a meaningful project where the five Nicola Valley Chiefs, Conayt Friendship Society, NVIT staff and elders, and most importantly the families of the loved ones lost. This memorial is meaningful and will be a space open to community to come, sit and reflect,” said Sue Sterling-Bur, VP of Students at NVIT.
Conayt received funding for the project through a grant from Women and Gender Equality Canada.
“In consultation with community elders, Chiefs, parents of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls, and the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology, it has been decided that a memorial serenity garden ill be developed on the grounds of the NVIT campus,” wrote Kelly L’Hirondelle, Conayt Executive Director.
NVIT also unveiled a permanent red dress display. The campus in Burnaby will also be putting a red dress on permanent display.
