Merritt City Council has voted unanimously to create a masterplan for the Claybanks RV park site which was damaged in the November floods.
“In the November flood event, Claybanks RV park was inundated. The damage on site was extensive, including destruction of service lines and utilities, perimeter fencing, and the recreation centre, which has now been removed. The flood also caused land loss on the parcel,” said CAO Sean Smith.
“Prior to proceeding with any reconstruction project, staff wanted to provide Council with the opportunity to provide its vision on how the Claybanks parcels could best be utilized, given its mix of C2 (Tourist Commercial) and P1 Zoning (Park and Cemetery),” added Smith. “In the view of staff, there may be an opportunity to continue with an RV park use, while also including a mix of recreational and tourist commercial opportunities that could allow for a truly unique and exciting offering in the community.”
It was also noted that as staff continue to have discussions around the flood plain, the site may not be best suited for an RV park going forward.
City Staff, through conversations with the provincial government anticipates that the cost of the master plan could be covered under a grant.
