As approximately 900 Merritt residents remain displaced from their homes following the November floods, the RCMP are seeing a rise in crimes of opportunity in the phase four area of town.
Mounties have received a 100% increase in break and enter calls to phase four as home which are not habitable are left vacant.
“We do recognize the concerns of residents in phase four area, with the break and enters that have been reported,” stated RCMP Sgt. Josh Roda. “We have seen a 100 per cent increase in break and enters this year to last year, which is significant. A lot of those break and enters are do to citizens leaving their properties unsecured.”
Roda did note that all of the reported break and enters have occurred in homes not being occupied following the floods.
Roda also mentioned how the city is looking to implement 24/7 security coverage of the phase four area with financial assistance of the Province. Details are still being confirmed on this initiative.
