Merritt launches text-in recovery support line for residents
Greg Lowis/City of Merritt
The City of Merritt is looking to get in touch with as many Merritt residents as possible who may still be displaced due to the November floods. It’s estimated that around 900 Merritt residents are still displaced from their homes.
“Our focus continues to be finding ways to bring people back home, it’s going to be a challenge and it’s going to take some time considering the vacancy rate was so low prior to the flood,” said Greg Solecki, Recovery Manager, City of Merritt. “We know some people are in hotels, some are with friends and families, and we want to get the message out to contact us.”
Residents still out of Merritt or even those in Merritt looking for further assistance should text Q101 at 250-378-6133 with the word ‘Merritt’. When that word is received, the sender will receive a response with information from the City of Merritt and a contact for a case worker.
“There may also be people who are home who still have unmet needs. They might need counseling, or support. If you’re home here in Merritt, still text if there is something missing that we can provide,” added Greg.
Merritt residents are asked to pass the number and information on to any family, friends or neighbours who may still be out of town.
The text response will look similar to this;
“Thank you for texting in. Please call 1.877.655.0341 between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm 7 days a week. The operator will connect you with a Case Manager who will return your call. It is important to us to help bring you home.”
