Roger Sloan was riding the cutline for most of his Friday round at the RSM Classic. Bouncing back from two early bogeys, Sloan rattled off a trio of birdies to reach 4-under, the projected cutline.
That’s when the drama started, Sloan carded a six on the par-5 eight hole, his 17th on the day after starting on the back-nine, to drop to 3-under and at risk of missing the cut.
The Merritt golfer then clutched a birdie on the par-4 9th, to move back onto the cutline and into the weekend in Sea Island, Georgia.
Prior to round one, Sloan told Q101 News he’d be playing with a heavy heart and hoped to roll in some birdies for those back home.
“I do this for a living, so once I get on the tee box I’ll focus in on my job. But as we’ve been preparing for the week I’ve been thinking about everybody, and hopefully I can bring some really good stuff to the golf course this week. I’m really hoping we can make some birdies out there and bring some positivity to some of these people that have been hit so hard,” said Sloan. “I’m motivated more so than other weeks to play well. We’re going to be focused out and put our best foot forward and try to do some damage on the golf course.”
“I haven’t really had a chance to breathe after that whirlwind summer, I’m looking forward to some off-time after this week,” said Sloan. “My game is starting to feel pretty good, I;ve been working on getting back to basics. If we hit one shot at a time this week we can do something special.”
Sloan will be hard-pressed to make a charge on moving day, entering round three, nine strokes back of the leaders.
Fellow Canadian MacKenzie Hughes is T3 at 11-under, while Corey Conners is T10 at 8-under.
