MERRITT LEGION CELEBRATES POPPY 100TH ANNIVERSARY

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Remembrance Poppy in Canada.
Every year, tens of millions of Canadians wear a poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s Veterans and remember those who sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy today.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the poppy, the Merritt Royal Canadian Legion Branch 096 is inviting the community to the Legion on Saturday between 11-2 for Legion Appreciation Day.

Legion President Arlene Johnston said it will be an opportunity for area residents to learn more about the Legion and what the organization does for the community.

“This is a terrific opportunity for us [RCL Branch 096] to showcase what it is we do here in the community,” said Johnston. “We will have displays upstairs at the Legion and people can meet some members who will be on hand and we certainly are looking forward to it.”

She noted that anyone wanting to become a Legion member will have an opportunity to do so as well as learn about how the local branch supports cadets in our area.

Johnston added that visitors to the Legion are also invited to enjoy a barbecue and refreshments and reminded everyone that Covid-19 Passports and Protocols will be adhered to.
