The BC RCMP Investigation into the fire, that impacted the Village of Lytton and neighbouring Indigenous communities on June 30, remains active and is progressing.
This announcement comes as the Transportation Safety Board announced Thursday that it couldn’t find a link between the fire that destroyed most of Lytton and a train that passed through the community on the same day.
A new T-S-B report says its investigators looked at video on the train, examined data from its locomotive event recorder and physically inspected the train once it reached Burnaby, but found no evidence that it sparked a fire.
Most of Lytton was destroyed within hours on June 30th, one day after the village set a Canadian heat record of 49.6 degrees following a week of sweltering temperatures.
The board says it won’t investigate further, but R-C-M-P and the B-C Wildfire Service continue to probe the cause of the fire that eventually burned 837 square kilometres and was finally declared under control in early September.
Meanwhile the RCMP said their police investigation continues to assess if there is possible criminality while being mindful of the other investigations that are focused on determining the cause and origin and looking at compliance or regulatory impacts.
The RCMP are asking that anyone who has not yet spoken to police and may have information is asked to please call Southeast District RCMP Tip/Information line at 250-470-6222.
