Merritt’s new Official Community Plan delayed
After a stress-filled Summer as wildfires burned in all directions around the City of Merritt, City Officials have announced the new Official Community Plan (OCP) has been delayed to allow for proper consultation.
“The Official Community Plan Update project was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021. This timeline, however, was devised before the COVID-19 pandemic was recognized and related restrictions were implemented by the Provincial and Federal governments,” wrote McArthur.
The wildfire season has also affected the City’s ability to consult with the local bands.
“First Nations consultation has been particularly challenging to organize. While not a statutory requirement, engagement with local First Nations is valued by the City and staff have made a significant effort to arrange meetings to have meaningful dialogue, including hiring an Indigenous consultant to assist with coordination. However, COVID19 and the recent wildfires have hindered these efforts,” said McArthur.
The City is now hoping to adopt the new OCP in the Spring of 2022.
