The City of Merritt has published a food security assessment report as part of the Official Community Plan (OCP) update.
“Over the past year, staff and the OCP consultant engaged with residents, stakeholders, and Council to develop a report which outlines the status of food security in Merritt and provide recommendations on actions that can be taken to ensure Merritt is a more food secure community,” said Planning Manager Don McArthur.
The report outlines five objectives to increase household and community food security in Merritt:
- Integrate food security into municipal social planning frameworks and activities
- Grow the local food and agriculture economy in Merritt
- Address food security in land use planning
- Shift municipal purchasing and operations to incorporate local food
- Advocate for a Food Secure Merritt
