Community outrage over a B-C Review Board decision to allow Allan Schoenborn the opportunity to apply for escorted day passes in the community helped prompt a protest rally at Coquitlam City Hall yesterday.

The rally heard from a number of speakers, including Stacie Gall, cousin of Darcie Clarke, whose three children were killed by Schoenborn in Merritt three years ago.

Today the B-C Review Board will take a second look at its decision to allow Schoenborn day passes.

Interface clean up projects are continuing on the perimeter of the City of Merritt this Spring.

Merritt's Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Tom Lacey says it's time to take it to the next stage and conduct further burns.

Lacey says weather permitting, the controlled burn, in conjunction with the Coldwater Fire Department and the Ministry of Forests, will be conducted next week.

The exact day of the burn won't be determined until early in the week, with notice given immediately on Q101.

The Merritt Fire Department responded to a small spot grass fire near the dike along the Coldwater River off Spring Street early this morning.

Crews were called out shortly after 3 a.m. and were able to control the fire quickly.

Ministry of Forests Fire Information Officer Travis Abbey says crews were also called out earlier this month to a large grass fire in Lower Nicola and to another near Kelowna and both were a result of controlled burns that were fanned by high winds and got away.

Fire season officially began April 1 and with numerous controlled burns, officials are keeping a watchful eye.
