In any year other than 2020, the final week of November holds a special role in Merritt, it’s Country Christmas Week. Sadly, due to COVID-19, the committee behind the holiday event was forced to cancel the celebration earlier this year.
The kick-off to Country Christmas has long been the tree lighting at Spirit Square as Merrittonians gather to sing carols and drink hot chocolate which takes place on the Monday of Country Christmas week.
With that event, and the whole week cancelled, Councillor Kurt Christopherson who sits on the Christmas Committee is challenging Merrittonians to show their Christmas spirit.
“I would like to put it out there as a challenge or request, that people in the Nicola Valley that are decorating and lighting up their houses, aim for that day, and on Monday, November 23, everybody turns on their Christmas lights outside,” said Christopherson.
Christopherson is hoping that by lighting up the City together next Monday, Merrittonians can share in one aspect of Country Christmas Celebrations, even in 2020.
