On Wednesday evening, School District 58 Nicola-Similkameen Superintendent Steve McNiven announced that the new local education agreement (LEA) has officially been signed by the five local first nation communities and the district.
The agreement sets forth roles each party will play in promoting and delivering indigenous education across the district.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 an official signing ceremony could not be held to celebrate the event. The district is still hoping to find a way to acknowledge the document in the future.
Before the new agreement the bands had separate agreements with the school district, the new LEA brings everybody together under one.
