The Merritt RCMP were called to an incident at the Diamondvale Elementary school grounds on July 30 shortly after 9:00 p.m., in relation to a report of an attempted abduction.
“Three twelve-year-old girls were reported to have been assaulted and held against their wills by a male. Merritt RCMP officers converged on the area and took a 37-year-old male into custody, the first two officers were on scene within four minutes of receiving the call,” said Cpl. Brock Hedrick.
A taser and knife were seized by police at the scene.
“The B.C Prosecution Service has just approved charges against Jamie Leighton Atwater, 37, who is a resident of Merritt.
Charges are as follows:
- One count of Assault with a weapon
- Two counts of Posses weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Uttering threats
