With the holiday season essentially underway and Christmas around the corner, Merritt’s Community Policing Office wants to ensure everybody is safe this season.

Coordinator Marlene Jones stopped by Q101 to discuss a time of year when thieves could easily be targeting homes and vehicles.

“It’s a busy time of year and with the exchange of funds, that can attract attention from a numerous amount of sources,” said Jones. “We’re just reminding people that when you’re out shopping for that special gift to keep those items out of view in your vehicle.”

Jones also spoke to the placement of your tree at home.

“It’s probably a good idea to make sure your gifts go under the tree the night before and make sure there isn’t a good view of the presents for outside,” said Jones.

“After Christmas if you’re lucky enough to get that big screen TV, store those boxes out of sight until recycling day. Those can give people an idea of what has been purchased and brought into your home,” added Jones.

Jones also hit on the importance of having somebody watching your place if you travel over the holidays and not posting to social media that you won’t be home.
