City hall

City Council approved a recommendation yesterday to have City Staff apply for the sixth intake of the rural dividend grant.

The city has received funding through the grant in previous years and Will George, Manager of Economic Development and Tourism, spoke to hoping to receive money to continue some successful programs.

In total the grant application will be for $100,000 split between different initiatives. The funds, should the city receive them, would help retain the grant writer recently hired by the city. The money would also allow the city to continue its youth entrepreneur program and to develop more tourism attraction videos.

Some of the new initiatives would include hiring a tourism coordinator.

“This is $20,000 to help with some of the initiatives that are in the tourism plan as well as the tourism asset mapping plan,” said George.

The final portion is for additional signage, something that George mentioned was a concern heard on the recent business walks.

City Approves Rodeo Sponsorship

Merritt City Council approved a ‘chute level’ sponsorship for the pro rodeo at $3,500. The original recommendation was for $2,500 but Coun. Tony Luck amended it.

The extra thousand was to switch from sponsoring the back page of the program to two inside pages that will be honouring past cowboys.

The pro rodeo rolls into town over the Labour Day long weekend.
