Merritt Secondary school and NVIT are set to welcome the province for the Eagles Perch Invitational. At its base, it’s an eight-grade boys and girls’ basketball tournament. But MSS Vice Principal John Cavaliere tells Q101 its a whole lot more than that.
“Because some of our tournament is happening at NVIT. We wanted to bring culture as well to the tournament. Before we kick off the first game, we’re going to have some drummers and elders do some welcoming songs. And try to have some indigenous dancers as part of the tournament as well,” said Cavaliere. “Make it a tournament that’s about basketball, about appreciation and about recognizing other cultures.”
Along with the cultural elements. Its also a chance to showcase NVIT to large group of potential future students that might otherwise never even considered the school.
“We want people around the province to know we have another great university that’s in Merritt,” continued Cavaliere. “It gives kids who might not know what’s out there another option.”
The Eagles Perch Invitational is set to tip off this afternoon with games held at both MSS and NVIT.
