Three simple steps can help people reduce their risk and be better prepared in the event of a fire.

It's National Fire Prevention Week, and the Merritt Fire Rescue Department's Krista Minar says this year's theme is 'Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware - fire can happen anywhere.'

"When we talk about residential fires, we want people to be aware of items around their home that could be potential sources for ignition. It might be your chimney, kitchen appliances, or over-burdened elctrical systems. Also there's candles, matches and other smoking materials. All of theses things can play apart in startging fires."

The annual Fire Prevention Week serves as a reminder to all British Columbians to learn about the dangers of fire, how to prevent it and how to keep your family safe by having and practicing an escape plan.

Minar says local firefighters are scheduled to be in area schools this week to help with messaging.
