FRAUD FACT FRIDAY: Timeshare & Vacation Rental Fraud
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Timeshare & Vacation Rental Fraud
They look like affordable getaways or last-minute deals, but the fine print hides fees, fake listings, or contracts that are almost impossible to escape.
How They Work
• Scammers post attractive rental listings or “exclusive” timeshare offers that don’t actually exist.
• They pressure you to pay upfront fees or deposits before you’ve seen anything in person.
• Fake agents use official-sounding language to make the offer feel legitimate.
• Once money is sent, the listing disappears and the scammer cuts off contact.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Verify the property through reputable booking platforms or direct contact with the real owner.
• Be cautious of deals that require immediate payment or wire transfers.
• Research the company or agent and look for consistent, credible reviews.
• Ask for all terms in writing before agreeing to anything.
What to Do If Targeted
• Stop communication and keep copies of all messages and payment records.
• Report the listing to the platform where you found it.
• Contact your bank immediately if you sent money and then call your local police to report losing that money.
Bottom Line
” If a vacation deal feels rushed or unusually cheap, slow down and verify before you pay.”
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
