Potential blue-green algae reported on Nicola Lake

nterior Health says it is aware of reports of blue-green algae blooms on Nicola Lake.

Two potential algae reports were made for the large lake northeast of Merritt on May 27 and June 13, according to the province’s BC Algae Watch map.

In an email to CFJC Today Wednesday (July 29), Interior Health says beach owners and visitors are responsible for monitoring public access points and private beaches at Nicola Lake. They may test algae blooms for the presence of toxins in partnership with health authorities.

“General information signage about blue-green algae is posted at many public access points and private beach areas around Nicola Lake to help people recognize potential risks,” Interior Health states.

Residents are told to avoid swimming in or drinking water where blue-green algae is present. Pets are also recommended to be kept out of water where the algae is suspected as exposure can cause serious illness.

Residents can report suspected algae bloom to the province’s Algae Watch program.
