Wildfire Closes Highway Three Between Princeton and Hope

Motorists are being advised that Highway 3 between Princeton and Hope remains closed this morning (July 23) as a result of the Norwegian Creek Wildfire (V10942)  that has expanded in size since being discovered last week.

Tinder dry terrain and windy conditions have allowed the wildfire to swell in size to 900 ha causing officials to close the highways for public safety.

The Norwegian Creek Wildfire (V10942) and other fires in the region are being referred to as the Manning Park Complex; is not currently threatening any buildings in the vicinity as 60 firefighting personnel and three helicopters are assigned to the area.

Drive BC is advising drivers to use the Coquihalla (Highway 5) as an alternative route.

There are currently 86 wildfires burning across the province this morning with 35 considered out-of-control. There are currently five Wildfires Of Note in the province meaning, that is creating an increased level of interest.

Three of those blazes come from the Brunswick Creek Complex of fires that have forced the closure of Highway 1 and the evacuation of properties in the area.

The Ainslie Creek, Anderson River, and Brunswick Creek wildfires are at a combined 21,000 ha as of Thursday morning.

Environment Canada has issued two weather warnings for the region including a Yellow Air Quality and Yellow Heat Advisory for the Nicola Valley.

For a third consecutive day, ash from the Brunswick Creek Complex continues to drift into the region. The weather service says that exposure to high smoke levels can pose threat to your health regardless of age or health status. You are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the warning has ended. Stay indoors in a space with cleaner air.

The area will also experience temperatures near 35 C today that could cause those with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease to have issues.
