FRAUD FRIDAYS: Fake Immigration / Visa Processing Scams
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Fake Immigration / Visa Processing Scams
What is a Fake Immigration / Visa Processing Scams?
These scams appear to offer fast, guaranteed immigration or visa approvals, but they’re designed to steal money and personal information.
How They Work
• Scammers pose as immigration consultants or government officials.
• They promise guaranteed approvals or special access for a fee.
• They ask for passports, IDs, or personal documents.
• They direct victims to fake websites that mimic government portals.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Use only licensed immigration consultants or official government sites.
• Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed results.
• Never send scans of passports or IDs to unknown contacts.
• Verify email addresses and website URLs carefully.
What to Do If Targeted
• Stop all communication and keep copies of messages.
• Report the incident to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
• Monitor your identity and credit for unusual activity.
Bottom Line
“No one can guarantee immigration approval. Anyone who claims otherwise is not legitimate.”
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
