FRAUD FRIDAYS: Charity Scams
Scam Alert | Pattison Media
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Charity Scams
What is an Charity Scams ?
A charity scam happens when criminals pose as legitimate organizations to steal donations or personal data. They often appear after natural disasters or during holiday seasons when people are most willing to give.
How They Work
• Fake solicitations: Calls, emails, or door-to-door requests for donations.
• Emotional appeal: Heartbreaking stories or urgent crises designed to pressure you.
• Impersonation: Copying the names of real charities or creating fake websites.
• Funds diverted: Instead of helping those in need, your money goes to the scammer
What to Watch For:
• Requests for cash, gift cards, or wire transfers.
• High-pressure tactics like “donate now or lives will be lost.”
• Charities with names very similar to well-known organizations.
• No official receipts or tax documentation.
• Websites without secure payment (no “https://”).
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Research before donating by checking official registries such as the Canada Revenue Agency’s list of registered charities.
• Donate directly through the charity’s official website or phone number.
• Ask for documentation since legitimate charities provide receipts for tax purposes.
• Be cautious of urgency and take time to confirm before giving.
• Talk to trusted friends or family if unsure.
What to Do If Targeted
• Stop communication immediately
• Notify your bank or credit card provider if money was sent.
• Report the scam to the local police, if you have lost money.
Charity scams prey on kindness. Protect your donations by verifying organizations and giving only through trusted channels
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
