FRAUD FRIDAYS: Service Scams
As the number of frauds and scams continues to grow in the Nicola Valley, Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers, and Q101 are teaming up to present Fraud Fridays, a feature designed to inform those in the community of the dangers of fraud, what they should look for, and what to do if they are a victim of fraud.
Marlene Jones, chair of the local chapter of Crime Stoppers, says that her organization is making fraud and fraud prevention a top priority in 2026, with hopes to keep the community safe from those looking to scam people out of their money and personal information.
Today’s Fraud Friday: Service Scams
What is a Service Scams ?
A service scam happens when someone offers to provide a service, like tech support, home repairs, or financial help, but either:
• The service is never delivered
• The work is poor or unnecessary
• The goal is to steal your money or personal information
How They Work
• Cold calls or pop-ups: Scammers claim your computer, bank account, or home system needs urgent attention
• High-pressure tactics: They push you to act immediately.
• Upfront payment: You’re asked to pay before any work is done.
• No real service: Either nothing is provided, or the “fix” causes more harm.
What to Watch For:
• Unsolicited offers for tech support, home maintenance, or financial services.
• Requests for remote access to your computer.
• Demands for payment upfront, especially via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.
• Vague contracts or refusal to provide written details.
Steps to Protect Yourself
• Verify the company: Research reviews and check official websites.
• Don’t trust unsolicited calls or pop-ups.
• Never give remote access to unknown technicians.
• Get written contracts before agreeing to services.
• Use secure payment methods like credit cards for added protection.
What to Do If Targeted
• Stop all contact with the scammer.
• Notify your bank/credit card provider if you shared financial info
• Report the incident to the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or your local police if you have lost money.
Service scams thrive on convenience, urgency and fear. Stay calm, verify independently, and never pay for services you didn’t request or don’t fully understand.
The Merritt & Nicola Valley Crime Stoppers are also looking for volunteers this year to help out with local events. If you can spare just a few hours a month or would like to become more active within the organization by reaching out to Crime Stoppers via their website at www.nicolavalleycrimestoppers.com.
