The generosity of the Nicola Valley was on display on Saturday as three RCMP cruisers and two pallets of food donations were collected during a four-hour “Stuff The Cruiser Toy and Food Drive” that will help replenish the shelves of the Nicola Valley Food Bank (NVFB) heading into the Christmas season.
Members of the Merritt detachment of the RCMP were at Walmart Saturday afternoon, collecting non-perishable food items and toys which will help make this Christmas brighter for many less fortunate families in the Nicola Valley.
“I’m overwhelmed with the response,” Cst. Danielle Orr, who coordinated the event, said on Saturday. “We (RCMP) can’t thank the community enough for coming out and supporting those in need this holiday season.”
The “Stuff the Cruiser Toy and Food Drive” also received a whopping two pallets of non-perishable food items collected by the staff at Reliable Towing, along with nearly $500 in cash donations.
“We are so appreciative of the support,” added Cst. Carly Gerein of the Merritt detachment. “The Nicola Valley Food Bank does so much for this community, and this time of year is hard for a lot of people, so we are happy to help in any way we can.”

Earlier this week, the Food Bank received a $500 donation from Murray Chevrolet Buick GMC from the recent Merritt Centennials Food Drive, as well as a $1000 donation from the staff at Mario’s Towing.
“This community never ceases to amaze me with its generosity,” said Derlanda Hewton, executive director of the NVFB. “People here look after one another, and year after year they open their hearts and pocketbooks to those in need.”
Despite the recent uptick in donations the Nicola Valley Food Bank is still accepting donations of non-perishable food items as well as toy and cash donations.

Meanwhile the Nicola Valley Food Bank is looking for volunteers to help with the Christmas Hamper campaign. If you can help, contact 250-378-2282 or email foodbank@telus.com.
