Local farmers quell field fire Monday afternoon

Quick action by some local farmers helped extinguish a fire in a field near Nicolls Rd. off the Sunshine Valley Rd East on Monday afternoon.

Lucas Handley told Q101 news that he was bailing hay when he saw smoke from a neighbor’s field. Following a phone call from the neighbor Handley arrived with a fire pump and water reserves, then he and several other neighbors were able to knock back the fire before any structures were lost.

Handley said they were mopping up a few hot spots in the area when the BC Wildfire Service arrived.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known but Handley said the quick action of the local farmers ensured nothing of value was lost.
