Inspiration for Merritt ALS Walk Passes Away

The man who inspired his family to host three successful ALS Walks in Merritt has succumbed to his disease.

Well-known logger Tony Caruso passed away on Wednesday surrounded by family.

Caruso was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis over four years ago. The disease more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is an incurable neurodegenerative disease that results in the progressive loss of motor neurons that control voluntary muscles.

Following Caruso’s diagnosis in 2019, his family has organized three well attended walks raising funds for ALS research in Merritt exceeding their target of $10-thousand dollar every year.

On Tuesday, friends, family and truck drivers from Merritt and area including Princeton showed their support for Caruso with a huge big-rig convoy by his residence.
