MERRITT – Even though the Thompson region is still facing a High Streamflow Advisory, the bodies of water specifically in the Merritt area have been lifted from the advisory.
According to the BC River Forecast Centre, the advisory has ended for the Nicola River and tributaries, including Guichon Creek, Spius Creek, Coldwater River and surrounding areas including Upper Nicola and Lower Nicola.
“In most areas, flood hazards have diminished as snowmelt and rainfall runoff has eased,” wrote BC River Forecast officials. “Most Ministry of Forests rivers in the Nicola, Bonaparte, North Thompson, Similkameen, Okanagan, have reached peak levels and are now receding.”
Even though the advisory has been lifted for Merritt, officials are still giving safety tips around the rivers, which include:
- Stay clear of fast-flowing rivers
- Stay clear of potentially unstable riverbanks
- Avoid recreational activities near high streamflow rivers
- Fishing
- Swimming
- Boating
- Hiking
