MERRITT – The City of Merritt are reminding residents of the items that cannot go in curbside recycle bins.
Officials are reminding the community of the accepted materials, which include:
- Paper products
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Paper bags
- Wrapping paper
- Carboard products
- Paper plates
- Egg cartons
- Milk cartoons
- Cardboard boxes
- Hard plastic products
- Plastic bottles
- Plastic garden pots
- Plastic containers
- Metal products
- Spray containers
- Cans and metal lids
- Foil containers
- Tin containers
More can be found on the acceptable products poster.
Within the City of Merritt, these items are not accepted in the curbside recycling program.
- Glass
- Plastic bags
- Paper towel
- Foam
- Books
- Hazardous materials
- Batteries
- Propane tank
- Bleach
- Motor oil
- Paint cans
- Lightbulbs
- Electronics
- Pots, pans, hangers, scrap metal
All materials going into the bins must be cleaned before disposing of properly.
According to the City, when objects are placed in the wrong bin, it causes disruptions in the recycling system.
“Machinery is used to manage the recycling process. There is not enough manpower to fix “wish-cycling.” When unacceptable items are placed in the Curbside bins, they cause the whole lot to be contaminated, requiring the entire load to be dealt with as garbage.”
Unaccepted materials must be recycled at the Lower Nicola Eco Depot or other local recyclable locations.
