MERRITT – More items are now defined as recyclable at local Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) Eco-Depots and Transfer Stations.
“It’s a pretty extensive list of what is accepted now,” said Andrew Roebbelen, Waste Reduction Coordinator with the TNRD. “They have included a whole bunch of the packaging like products and single use products. Some of these borderline products that the government has asked to be included in the regulations and so Recycle BC, as of January 1, will include them.”
Some of those new items being added to collection of Eco-Depots include:
- Plastic cutlery and straws
- Plastic hangers
- Plastic plates, bowls, and cups
- Aluminum foil
- Aluminum foil, baking dishes and pie plates
- Plastic sandwich and freezer bags
- Flexible plastics
- Plastic recycling bags
- Plastic carryout shopping bags
With an increase of products, comes an increase on pressure on the stations, but Roebbelen said they are prepared to handle to load.
“I’m expecting to see a ramp up of these new types of products and packaging being brought in. I expect to see, over the next couple of months, is people being more familiar with what they can bring in and so we are going to start to see more volume getting pushed through our sites. I don’t see more traffic but maybe more volume per person coming through. All of the TNRD operated Eco-Depots and Transfer Stations are accepting these new materials along with the other materials you would normally bring in. Our attendants are prepared and do a great job.”
When it comes to making the recycling process more efficient, Roebbelen gives a reminder.
“Even with this new material, scrap off any of the food residue and give it a rinse, if you can. A good clean material is what’s going to keep our recycling system working.”
The Lower Nicola Eco-Depot is open everyday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m..
