MERRITT – Literacy Merritt and Nicola Valley Society are looking for volunteers for their One to One program.
“One to One did not run in the Nicola Valley during COVID,” said Lia Larson, Chair of Literacy Merritt & Nicola Valley Society. “We are thrilled to get back into the schools and read with the children. By volunteering just a few hours once a week, tutors can make a real difference, and help a child develop a love of reading to last a lifetime.”
This program involves tutors reading with three students for 30 minutes each at a local elementary school once a week, for 10-12 weeks.
According to the Society, this volunteer work increases the students self-confidence, reading fluency and comprehension, and their chance of success at school and in life.
Volunteers would need to attend a 2-3 hour training session and a school orientation before the volunteering sessions begin. The sessions will be offered in October.
If residents want to register they can email literacymerritt@gmail.ca or call 250-378-7844.
