The City of Merritt and the Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) are reminding residents cleaning up from the November floods that time is running out to dispose of flood related debris free of charge at the Lower Nicola Eco Depot.
The Flood Debris Removal Program was launched in November to help those affected by the atmospheric river which left a path of devastation in its wake, and has been funded by Emergency Management BC.
“Only debris caused directly by flooding in November is eligible to be disposed of free of charge, as part of the Flood Debris Removal Program,” said Jaime Vieira, deputy General Operations Manager of the TNRD. “So people cleaning up their basements or removing debris from your yard can dispose of these items and it’s all covered by the province of B.C.”
Vieira noted that the amount of flood related garbage that has been collected since November has been mind-boggling.
“It’s been staggering to see the amount of material that has been brought to the Eco Depot,” Vieira added.” “To date more than a half-million dollars in disposal fees have been covered by the Flood Debris Removal Program.”
The program has been extended until May 31st, but after that regular tipping fees will apply for residents disposing of flood debris.
