The Canadian Red Cross is extending emergency support for those still in need following the November floods. It was noted that it is not a blanket extension and residents need to get back in touch with the Red Cross to extend their services.
“We understand that there are a lot of barriers that continue to impede people being able to reenter their homes. We are looking to extend our housing supports and basic needs to the end of March 31,” said Rachel Oliver.
The supports centre around accommodation and food.
Due to housing shortages in the community, Mayor Linda Brown questioned what comes after March 31, 2022 for those who remain out of their homes.
“Right now what we can do is till March 31. In the period between now and March 31 we’re going to continue to work with individuals on what their plans are, and continue to work with the community on what the needs are,” said Sarah Howe. “What we need to do is keep having the ongoing conversations. It’s really hard to ensure what happens after March 31.”
Howe continued to state that the Red Cross does commit to continue to work with the City of Merritt and the community.
Those with questions should reach out directly to the Red Cross or to the Merritt Support Centre, located at the Railyard Mall.
