On Sunday, the City of Merritt completed the Rapid Damage Assessment (RDA) of homes affected by flood waters. While several houses received a red placard, EOC Communications Manager Greg Lowis was happy to report a large number of green tags being placed on homes.
“They were completed today,” began Lowis. “They have accessed every home in the flood zone. Unfortunately, not every home has made it, but the generally good news is that there were far fewer red flags than we expected.”
City Hall is working to open up a phone and online portal for residents to inquire about their homes. For privacy reason, they can’t put out a blanket list or map online. That information will become available later today.
Lowis also addressed that later today (Monday), Merrittonians will find out about the staged return to some parts of the community.
“We’ve been working on a plan to bring Merrittonians home and what that will look like,” said Lowis. “There will be a plan coming on Monday that will announce to people in some areas of the City when they can return home. This is the start of the road, not the end of the process.”
The permanent return to Merritt will be based on zones, released by the city on Monday.
Those who do return will be doing so to a town with a boil water advisory in effect and asked to conserve water as only one city well is currently operational.
