‘Alleviate some crime fears through volunteering’; Merritt RCMP

Recently, a group of Merrittonains held a crime rally outside of City Hall to try and bring more attention to the crime issues around the City. Following the rally, Merritt City Council held a Police Committee meeting to discuss the current situation in the Merritt RCMP’s jurisdiction.

At the meeting, Mayor Linda Brown asked what could be done to help alleviate some of the fears of the citizens.

“One of the best ways for people to engage and address those fears is to step up and volunteer for some of the programs we have in our municipality,” began Cst. David Feller. “We do have very strong block watch programs, we do have business watch programs, we have a lot of organizations in place for the community at the Community Policing Office. We are at a real lack of volunteers for our programs right now, we would love to see the public participate.”

“There are a lot of ways that those individuals that are passionate and fired up can volunteer with us and have a real positive effect on our community,” added Feller.

Along with block watch, the CPO also runs a business watch program that local business owners can enroll in.

“There are absolutely a lot of meaningful ways that our citizens can involve themselves in the process,” concluded Feller.

The programs are run out of the CPO located in Spirit Square.
