Merritt applying for two awards from UBCM
The City of Merritt is applying for two awards this year from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM).
“Staff have reviewed the award categories and program guide and recommend applying for two awards; Excellence in Governance and Excellence in Service Delivery,” said Merritt CAO Sean Smith.
The excellence in governance award surrounds flood response to mitigation and planning.
“Since the Fall of 2018, Mayor and Council made it a priority to address flood risk within our community. Several steps were taken to determine strategies for mitigation, planning, and response to flood events. Major projects include the Voght Street Structural Flood Mitigation Project and the Flood Hazard Mapping project,” said Smith.
The second award, for excellence in service delivery is for the newly created business licensing program.
“Merritt’s new business licensing program and Inter-Community Business License options are simple, efficient, and business friendly. The program demonstrates excellence in service delivery by providing effective services that benefit both businesses and the broader community,” added Smith.
Merritt City Council directed staff to apply for the awards through a 7-0 vote.
