Interior Health issues alert after Merritt sees increase in overdoses

Interior Health has issued an overdose alert for Merritt, warning of the presence of benzodiazepines in street drugs in that community.The alert, posted to the IH website, notes a recent increase in “overdoses with severe outcomes” in Merritt.It notes a user who consumes drugs that contain benzodiazepines could be subject to prolonged sedation that does not respond to naloxone.

The alert urges those who use drugs to avoid using different drugs at the same time, or mixing with alcohol. It is also advised that they get their drugs checked with ASK Wellness and ensure they are using in the presence of someone else who can help in the case of emergency.
