Council creates annual scholarships
Merritt City Council has unanimously supported a notice of motion from Mayor Linda Brown to create two annual scholarships.
The two $1,000 scholarships will be available for local youth looking to pursue a post-secondary education at NVIT or anywhere else.
“This is something that I’ve been asking for a few years. This is one way that we support our community, is to support our kids to going to post-secondary,” said Brown. “I spent time at grade ceremony’s giving a speech. And I was quite embarrassed that most of the community organizations had provided funding for the kid’s post-secondary, but the City didn’t.”
“It’s high time we did (have a scholarship),” agreed Councillor Kurt Christopherson.
Mayor Brown mentioned that the City will take direction from the School District for who to award the scholarships to.
